SERMON TITLE: IMPOSSIBLE SITUATIONS

TEXT:  Exodus 14

INTRODUCTION.

The Old Testament is filled with lessons that are relevant for us today. According to 1 Corinthians 10:6ff we must pay attention to these examples, especially to the warnings. How God deals with his people in generations past, gives us clues about how God deals with his people now.

DISCUSSION.

Have you ever faced a situation that made you feel helpless or hopeless? What was it like, and how did it turn out?

EXAMINATION.

Briefly review the first 13 chapters of Exodus.

  • What situation is Israel in?
  • How do we know that this doesn’t catch God by surprise?
  • Why does it take 10 plagues to convince Pharaoh to let the people go?

14:1-4 What reason does God give for having the people to turn back?

14:5-9 Looking at all the descriptors of Pharaoh’s forces, what was he out to accomplish?

Why does the Lord harden Pharaoh’s heart?

14:10-14 Why does Israel react this way?

What do you think of Moses’ speech?

14:15-18 Does the Lord’s response to Moses’ speech seem strange? Why or why not?

How can God get glory by destruction? What does glory mean in this case?

14:19-25 Does the text present the parting of the waters as a miracle or a natural phenomenon controlled by God?

14:26-31 Reading carefully, what clue do you see that there were Egyptians who were not in the sea bed, but lived to report what happened?

What indications are there that this deliverance impacted Israel in a greater way than the plagues, Passover, and pillars of cloud and fire?

APPLICATION.

  • What different purposes can you think of for God intentionally allowing us to be faced with impossible situations?
  • How has God reminded you of his promises during difficult times?
  • In what way is salvation through Jesus the truest parallel to the Red Sea crossing?
  • If you believe that God is sovereignly in control of his creation, how should that impact your view of life and circumstances?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
