DISCUSSION.

How do you think the average person would complete the statement “Love is…”?

EXAMINATION.

Vv.1-3 Why do you think Paul speaks in the first person here?

Is he using any hyperbole? Why or why not?

What is his point?

Vv.4-7 There are 15 verbs used to describe this kind of love. Which ones seem most obviously connected to the problems in the Corinthian church?

How do these connect to the subject of spiritual gifts in chapters 12 and 14?

Vv.8-13 Why will gifts such as prophecy, tongues, and knowledge end?

What is the purpose of Paul’s illustration about giving up childish ways?

In what way is love the greatest of these?

APPLICATION.

  • How applicable is this definition of love to those outside of Christ?
  • How can this type of love be demonstrated in the context of spiritual gifts?
  • What can you do to increase the level of agape love in your life?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
