Introduction.

The prophet Isaiah brought a message to God’s people more than 700 years before Jesus was born. Isaiah warned of God’s judgment for the nation’s lack of obedience and insincere worship, and called them to turn from their sin. Eventually, Israel would experience destruction of their homes and cities, and be carried off as captives to a foreign land. But part of Isaiah’s message promised a better future. A time when a Spirit-filled deliverer would bring relief. Centuries later, Jesus declared that he was the answer to this promise (Luke 4:17-21).

Have you ever heard good news that you never expected to hear, or had a promise kept that you never thought would be kept? What was that like?

EXAMINATION.

vv.1-3 These words are in the first person. Is there anything in the context that identifies the speaker?

What would it mean to preach good news to the poor?

Who are the brokenhearted?

Compare this with what Jesus read in Luke 4. Where did he stop reading and why?

APPLICATION.

  • How did Jesus fulfill this prophecy?
  • In what ways have you experienced Jesus healing brokenness, setting you free, etc?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
