Introduction. 

This series is a verse by verse study of 1 Corinthians. Paul writes to the church he founded in the most important city in Greece. A few years after Paul moves on, he writes this letter to answer the issues and confusion experienced by the Corinthian church. These words are extremely relevant to the church today. It reveals the problems, pressures, and struggles of God’s people called out of a pagan culture. Division, spiritual pride, sexual immorality, lawsuits, and misuse of the Lord’s Table are some of the matters addressed. This word from God is applicable to us now, clearing up any confusion about our identity in Christ, and how to carry out his mission in our world.

If you ever competed in a race, played a game, or participated in a sporting event, what made the difference between winning and losing?

APPLICATION.

  • In reaching out to our world, Christians can fall into two opposite dangers: extreme separatism or extreme compromise. Which one do you think is most prevalent and why?
  • What rights does the American church cling to that might get in the way of spreading the gospel?
  • How can you avoid being judgmental of the behavior of those who don’t belong to Christ and still be true to the gospel?
  • Since the incarnation is the greatest example of God’s willingness to reach lost people, how does that inform your approach to reaching others?
