SERMON TITLE: RISING ABOVE OUR FEARS

TEXT:  Isaiah 41:8-10

INTRODUCTION.

Fear is something we all experience. There are many reasons to feel fearful, both real and imagined. In Christ, we don’t have to be enslaved by our fears. We can rise above them.

DISCUSSION.

What kinds of things frightened you as a child, and how did you find comfort? Was it a person, place, or thing?

EXAMINATION.

Vv.8-10 What do the terms God uses to refer to Israel reveal about his relationship with them?

How would these words calm their fears?

Since there words are specifically addressed to Israel, on what basis can we claim these promises today?

What is significant about the “righteous right hand”?

APPLICATION.

  • How does the knowledge of God’s presence help me not be enslaved by fear?
  • When God says “do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God,” what kinds of fears take our attention away from God?
  • In addition to the attention-getting fears you identified, discuss how the following might take the focus away from God:
    • My Miserable Situation
    • My People-pleasing.
    • My Imagination.
    • My Limitations.
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
