Sermons

Introduction.

This series focuses on the “I AM” statements Jesus made, recorded in the Gospel of John. Even by itself, the phrase “I AM” was incendiary. That was the name of God revealed to Moses (Exodus 3). When Jesus referred to himself this way, people tried to kill him for blaspheming (John 8:58-59). Seven other times, Jesus attached a descriptor to this phrase. Each of those descriptions reveals something significant about his identity and character. If you want to know who Jesus is, learn the I AMs. If you want to become more like Jesus, live the I AMs.

PART ONE: The Bread of Life

TEXT:  John 6:25-35

DISCUSSION.

Tell about a time you wanted something so badly, got it, and then realized it was not what you expected or imagined.

EXAMINATION.

Vv.25-27 According to Jesus, what is the crowd looking for, and how is it different from what Jesus says they need?

Vv.28-29 Why do you think the people wanted to know how to do the “works of God”, and how is Jesus’ answer different from what they might have expected?

Vv.30-34 The crowd wanted a sign from Jesus, like the manna their ancestors received in the desert. How does Jesus correct, contradict, or challenge their request?

V.35 What is Jesus saying about himself?

What has to happen for someone to experience what Jesus offers?

APPLICATION.

  • What are some common things that people look to for satisfaction, to fill a sense of emptiness in life?
  • In what way does Jesus claim to satisfy those kinds of longings?
  • How have you experienced Jesus as the “bread of life”?
  • What change could you make to your life this week, that would keep you from looking for satisfaction in other places, and find it in Jesus?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
