Introduction.

The Book of Psalms is comprised of five books and Psalm 42 begins the second book. The Sons of Korah have written a beautiful song in regards to dealing with spiritual depression. We see the psalmist wrestle with his faith due to his current situation and surroundings and in the end we see hope have victory in the midst of the struggles and pains of life.

INTRODUCTION.

DISCUSSION.

  • Have you ever personally or known someone that has struggled or dealt with depression in your life?
  • Is it okay for a Christian to struggle with depression?

EXAMINATION.

Vv. 1-5

What does it mean to thirst for God? (see Psalm 84)

Why is it important to be involved in consistent community and corporate worship with other believers?

How would you describe/define “hope in God” to a family member, friend, or stranger?

What is the sovereignty of God and how does it give us hope in dark times?

Vv. 6-11

Why does the psalmist use water imagery to describe his pain and struggles?

Why is it important to ask God questions in the midst of trials and suffering?

List some things that “cast us down.” List some things that give us hope.

 APPLICATION.

  • What can/should we do as followers of Jesus when “doing life” with family and/or friends who are in the midst of depression.
  • What truths about God can you focus on in the midst of a difficult situation?
  • When was the last time you checked in on someone in the midst of a storm to see how they’re doing? How can you bring hope to them better?
