SERMON TITLE: REMEMBER

TEXT:  I Corinthians 11:23-26

INTRODUCTION.

The Lord’s Table is to be a continual reminder of what Christ has done for his people. It is critical that we give great attention to this observance.

DISCUSSION.

In what ways do meals mark special occasions in your life?

EXAMINATION.

Vv.23-24  Why is it significant that this happened on the night Jesus was betrayed?

What do you think the breaking of the bread symbolizes?

Why do we say that the bread represents Jesus’ body?

V.25 What is the new covenant in his blood?

How do we remember Christ with the cup?

V.26 Why does Paul only say this proclaims the Lord’s death? What about the resurrection?

How often should we celebrate the Lord’s Table?

APPLICATION.

  • The elements of Communion are bread (kind not specified) and “the fruit of the vine” (Matthew 26:29; Mark 14:25; Luke 22:18). Would it help or hurt the observance to use other elements instead? Why or why not?
  • How well do you prepare for Communion and what specifically could you do to be better prepared?
  • How does the bread and cup help you to remember?
  • What can you do to keep Communion from being a primarily individual observance rather than a corporate one?
  • What styles and methods of observance would increase your appreciation for Communion?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
