SERMON TITLE: MORE THAN A NAME

TEXT:   Romans 16:1-16

DISCUSSION.

What determines whether or not you keep up with old friends?

EXAMINATION.

  • Although Paul had never been to Rome, what do these verses tell us about Paul’s perception of the church?
  • What kinds of things does Paul commend in these people?
  • Does it seem like Paul had close relationships with them, or just knew their names? Why?
  • What does this list indicate about the role of women in the church?
  • Three characteristics of this list of names are: loyalty, intimacy, and diversity. How are each of these characteristics demonstrated and do you note any others?

APPLICATION.

  • Which characteristic is least commonly found in churches and why? Loyalty, Intimacy, or Diversity?
  • Given Paul’s frequent mention of hard work, but not results, what does this say about how we should judge success?
  • How can we do a better job of expressing appropriate intimacy with each other?
  • How does the gospel break down the dividing walls and bring us together with God and with each other?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
