Introduction.

It is often stated that the book of Acts, or the Acts of the Apostles, would be more accurately titled the Acts of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who moves in the hearts of believers to fulfill the work of the great commission. In Luke 24:49 Jesus tells His disciples that He was going to send them to the nations but that they needed to wait in the city until they were “clothed with power from on high,” or received and filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they would go to the nations starting in Jerusalem and going even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). In Acts 13 and 14 the Holy Spirit speaks to the Church at Antioch, as they were worshipping and fasting, the Holy Spirit calls out and sends Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey (Acts 13:2).

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Paul and Barnabas proclaim the gospel and plant churches in the region of Galatia (Antioch Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derby).

DISCUSSION.

In what ways does the Holy Spirit work through the local church to complete the great commission?

EXAMINATION.

Acts 13:1-4

What prompts the work of the Holy Spirit in sending?

When the Holy Spirit is prompted, who is He responding to?

If CBC wants to raise up missionaries, where would be a good place to start?

Acts 13:14 – 14:23

Where and how is the gospel shared?

What is the role of persecution?

In vs. 13:49, the word of the Lord is spreading through the whole region…who’s spreading the word?

In vs. 13:51, they shook the dust of their feet and left. Why?

What patterns do you see of developing as Paul and Barnabas journey through Antioch Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe?

Acts 14:23 – 27

In vs. 14:23 where does Paul appoint Elders? Did the churches exist before Elders where appointed?

Why is it important the Paul and Barnabas report back to the church of Antioch, vs. 26-27?

APPLICATION.

  • What role does the local church play in God’s Kingdom mission?
  • What patterns in these passages should the local church be implementing?
  • As Christians, should we expect persecution as a result of gospel sowing?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
