Introduction.

The gospel of Mark portrays Jesus as a Servant on the move. Using the word “immediately” over 40 times, he shows Jesus ministering. Obedient to the Father’s will, Jesus preaches the good news, heals the sick, teaches his followers, and performs miracles. All the while, he heads toward his sacrificial death on the cross. Mark 10:45 sums up his mission: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark’s gospel reveals Jesus to be the perfect Servant and the perfect Sacrifice. Those who receive him as the good news, are empowered to serve in his name.

DISCUSSION.

Which do you think the average church-goer has more trouble believing: that Jesus is fully God or that Jesus is fully human? Why?

EXAMINATION.

4:35-41 After the great storm, Jesus brought great calm, and yet the disciples still had great fear. Why?

5:1-20 Why would the demon possessed man fall down at Jesus’ feet?

Why did the people react to the miracle by begging Jesus to leave?

5:21-34 What was different about the woman touching Jesus, contrasted with all the other people who were touching him?

5:35-43 Why does Jesus send away the mourners, leaving only the girl’s parents and three of his disciples?

APPLICATION.

  • How do these four miracles inform your view of Jesus, and what difference should it make in your life?
  • Read Colossians 1:15-20. In what way does Mark’s description of Jesus support this?
  • Which of these characters do you most closely identify with and why?
    • The disciples during in the storm
    • The demon possessed man
    • The woman who suffered for 12 years
    • Jairus
  • In what way should followers of Jesus be like the man after he was released from demon possession?
  • What, if anything, keeps you from responding that way?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
