Introduction.

James writes to the Jewish Christians that have fled intense persecution to find joy in their difficult circumstances. He also reminds them that an authentic faith is more than just going through the motions of rituals and traditions. We cannot be just hearers of the Word of God; instead we must be doers of the faith because an authentic faith is an active faith.

SERIES TITLE: Active Faith

SPEAKER: Pastor Jonathan Chang

TEXT: James 1:19-27

INTRODUCTION.

James writes to the Jewish Christians that have fled intense persecution to find joy in their difficult circumstances. He also reminds them that an authentic faith is more than just going through the motions of rituals and traditions. We cannot be just hearers of the Word of God; instead we must be doers of the faith because an authentic faith is an active faith.

DISCUSSION.

  • Being quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger seems like a simple instruction. Why is it so difficult?
  • How would you explain the difference between a doer of the Word and a hearer of the Word?

EXAMINATION.

Vv. 19-21

What does it mean to be “quick to hear”?

What does it mean to be “slow to speak and anger”?

Why is meekness considered a weakness in today’s day?

Theologically speaking, how should the implanted Word of God affect your daily life?

Vv. 22-25

How does a “doer” and “hearer” of the Word differ from each other?

Is being a “hearer” of the Word a bad thing? Why or why not?

What is the Law of Christ?

Vv. 26-27

Why does James bring up the importance of controlled speech again?

What is the significance of James using the example of orphans and widows in these verses?

What does it mean to be “unstained” from the world?

 APPLICATION.

  • If you take an honest look at your life, are you quick to hear and slow to speak? Why or why not?
  • What must be done in your life today in order to battle anger?
  • If an outsider observed your life, would you fall under the category of hearer, doer, or both? Explain.
  • What can be done right now; today, in order for you to be a hearer and doer of the Word?
  • What safe guards can you put up as you are in ministry “in the world” so that you do not become “of the world?”
