PART THREE: When Praise Is Painful

TEXT:  Psalm 137

INTRODUCTION.

The Psalms served as the hymnal, prayer book, and devotional guide for the Jewish people. Made up of 150 songs, Psalms covers a full range of human experience. In this series, we will focus on four Psalms that deal with unique aspects of worship.

DISCUSSION.

Describe a time when how you felt did not match with the mood of a corporate worship service. Did the service lift your spirits? Depress you? Leave you unchanged?

EXAMINATION.

V.1 What are the circumstances of this psalm?

Vv.2-4 Why do the captors demand songs?

Vv.5-6 Why is remembering Jerusalem so important to the psalmist?

V.7 What had Edom done? (See Obadiah 1:8-14)

Vv.8-9 What must the Babylonians have done in taking Israel captive?

Why is it significant if the verb “repays” refers only to divine retribution? (see Isaiah 59:18; Jeremiah 25:14)

APPLICATION.

  • One lesson from this psalm is that “Telling God about your pain is worship.” Is lament and grief something we make room for in worship? Should we? Why or why not?
  • Another lesson is that “Waiting for God’s justice is worship.” What does it mean to wait for God’s justice and how is it done?
  • What individuals or people groups in our world today could identify with the grief of Psalm 137, and why?
  • In what ways has or should this psalm change your worship? In what way was Jesus the answer to this cry for justice?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
