SERIES TITLE: What About Eternity?

PART THREE:  At the Finish LIne

TEXT:  Matthew 25:14-30

INTRODUCTION.

This five part series explores some of what the Bible reveals is ahead for those whose trust is in Christ. Jesus spoke frequently of this future existence. Through his words and other portions of Scripture we see why we long for eternity, what it will be like, and how we need to live until then.

DISCUSSION

Did you ever lose or damage something that was entrusted to you for safekeeping, like jewelry, money, a car? How did you feel?

EXAMINATION.

The parable of the talents is one of several that Jesus tells to give an idea of what the kingdom of heaven is like (25:1).

Vv.14-18 Why do you think the master gives the servants differing amounts?

Vv.19-23 What significance might there be in the detail that it was a “long time” before the master returned?

Why does the master say the same thing to the first two servants (vv.21, 23), when they hadn’t been given the same amount?

Vv.24-30 Can you see any reasons why the master is so harsh with the third servant?

APPLICATION.

  • Although the word “talent” is a measurement of money in this story, what can this represent in your life?
  • How do you believe those who were listening to Jesus would apply/understand this story? How does that compare with how you apply/understand it?
  • If the master represents God, in what way is it possible for us to share in his happiness?
  • Who do you think is deserving of God saying “Well done” and why?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
