Introduction.

This five part series explores some of what the Bible reveals is ahead for those whose trust is in Christ. Jesus spoke frequently of this future existence. Through his words and other portions of Scripture we see why we long for eternity, what it will be like, and how we need to live until then.

SERIES TITLE: What About Eternity?

PART TWO:  A Place to Call Home

TEXT:  John 14:1-3

INTRODUCTION.

This five part series explores some of what the Bible reveals is ahead for those whose trust is in Christ. Jesus spoke frequently of this future existence. Through his words and other portions of Scripture we see why we long for eternity, what it will be like, and how we need to live until then.

DISCUSSION

Books have been written by people who claim to have seen heaven. Should we give these accounts any attention? Why or why not?

EXAMINATION.

V.1 Why are the disciples hearts troubled?

Why does Jesus ask them to believe in him as they believe in God, when he repeatedly claimed to be God (e.g. John 10:30)?

V.2 How do we know what Jesus is referring to when he mentioned the “Father’s house”?

In what way would Jesus be “preparing a place” there?

V.3 Why does Jesus say that when he comes, he will “take you to myself” rather than saying, to the Father’s house?

APPLICATION.

  • From Jesus’ few words here, what characteristics of heaven stand out to you?
  • What would you prefer, vast open space, or individual dwelling? Why?
  • How important are Jesus’ words in v.6, and why do so many people find that message difficult in our world?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
