Introduction.

Palm Sunday is seen as a time of celebration. Churches often commemorate it like a pre-Easter party. “The resurrection is next week. Rejoice!” Although the atmosphere that day was one of celebration, the joy was based on false expectations. The parade is vitally important. All the gospels record it. But a party is not the point. Luke says Jesus cried (14:41).

DISCUSSION

What do you like most and least about parades?

EXAMINATION.

Vv.12-16 What previous stories stand in contrast to the enthusiasm the people are expressing here?

Given that this was Passover, what expectations might the crowd have had based on what God did at the first Passover? (Exodus 12:12)

Do you think the crowd or the disciples had in mind the Zechariah 9:9 prophecy? Why or why not?

What was it that the disciples didn’t understand?

What does “after Jesus was glorified” refer to?

vv.17-19 What was Jesus popularity based upon here?

What are the Pharisees so concerned about?

APPLICATION.

  • How do we tend to shape Jesus into the savior we want, rather than allow him to be the Savior we need?
  • Have you ever had any wrong expectations of Jesus? How were they changed?
  • Is your worship life like a hero’s victory or a funeral dirge? Why?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
