Introduction.

We live in a time and age in which we are encouraged to live as we please. As believers, Scripture tells us otherwise. It is important to remember the call to godliness and realize who we truly are in Christ. We must recalibrate daily in order to die to ourselves and live for Christ now until we are with him forever in glory.

SERIES TITLE: Recalibrate

PART ONE: Who Am I?

SPEAKER:  Pastor Jonathan Chang

TEXT: Romans 6:1-14

INTRODUCTION.

We live in a time and age in which we are encouraged to live as we please. As believers, Scripture tells us otherwise. It is important to remember the call to godliness and realize who we truly are in Christ. We must recalibrate daily in order to die to ourselves and live for Christ now until we are with him forever in glory.

DISCUSSION

  • What in our culture do you see today that promotes sin and self? Why would you say so?
  • Why do we not take sin seriously in our lives?
  • Why is it so difficult to live fully for God?
  • What struggles do you face daily as you strive to live godly lives?

EXAMINATION.

Vv.1-2

Is it possible to sin and live as you please knowing that you are under grace? Why?

What does antinomianism mean?

Vv.3-4

What does being in Christ as opposed to being in Adam mean? How does one be in Christ?

What does "newness of life" mean?

Vv.5-10

If comfortable, share about your "old self" with your brothers and sisters.

How does your life look now as a follower of Christ compared to your old self?

What peace and/or hope do believers have knowing that they will live with Christ (here and the future)?

Vv.11-14

What does "members" mean in verse 13?

The Greek word used for "instrument" is hoplon which describes a weapon of war. How can you use your body as a weapon as an instrument of righteousness?

Why is the mind such an important "member?"

APPLICATION.

  • How would you describe "newness of life" to someone that is not a believer?
  • If someone observed your life today, would they be able to tell that you're a follower of Christ?
  • What safeguards need to be set up in your life to resist sin? Who can help keep you accountable?
  • What better things could you do than "keep sinning?"
  • Do we take advantage of the grace of God? Why and How?
  • How can you pray earnestly for your fellow brother and sister as you journey together in your faith walk in becoming more like Christ?
  • How can we as believers think "positionally" as opposed to "positively?"
