Money is one of the most uncomfortable subjects for people to discuss. However, our view of and use of money is an enormously significant spiritual issue. It cannot buy our salvation, but it does reveal our level of discipleship. Through this series, we are reminded how the generous gift of God in Christ calls us to be a generous people.

SESSION FIVE: Generosity Asks God for Much

INTRODUCTION.

It cannot buy our salvation, but it does reveal our level of discipleship. Through this series, we are reminded how the generous gift of God in Christ calls us to be a generous people. 

DISCUSSION

Think of a time when you received more or less than you expected. What was that like?

EXAMINATION.

  • Vv.13-15 Identify the different life circumstances mentioned here and the response believers should have.
  • V.16 How does this verse fit into that context?
  • “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” v.16b
    • The word “effective” means energy and passion directed at accomplishing something. What does that kind of prayer look like?
    • Who qualifies as a “righteous” person?
  • V.17-18 Elijah was an amazing prophet of God. How can he possibly be used as an example?

APPLICATION.

  • Based on v.16, what are some ways your prayers should change in order to accomplish much?
  • How can the concept of asking God for much be misapplied or misunderstood?
  • What kinds of things do you find it most difficult to ask God for or believe he will do?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel
  • Act: What are you going to do?
