SERIES TITLE: Deeper

SESSION TEN: Deep Assurance

TEXT: 1John 5:1-13

INTRODUCTION.

The series’ theme comes from 1 John 2:24, “If what you heard from the beginning lives deeply in you, you will live deeply in both Son and Father.” [The Message] We all want to be deep. We want something lasting, substantive, and profound. This study of 1 John calls us to deeply root ourselves in Jesus, in order to thrive in a fallen world.

DISCUSSION.

Do you think people are more certain or less certain of what is true today than they were a generation ago? Why?

EXAMINATION.

  • V.1 What does it mean to be born of God? (Consider John 1:12-13)
  • Vv.2-3 The Bible says God loved us before we loved him (Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:19), so what has to happen in us before can love God or his people?
  • When John says we love God by keeping his commands, does this mean we earn God’s love by obedience? Why or why not?
  • Vv.4-5 According to 1 John 2:16, the things of the world are craving what I shouldn’t have, lusting visually, and bragging about my success. In what way have believers “overcome” the world? On what is that victory based?
  • Vv.6-13 What is the testimony of the water and the blood?
  • The testimony of the Spirit is in the present tense, meaning it is still occurring. How?
  • In what way are making God a liar if we don’t accept his testimony?

APPLICATION.

  • On what basis is anyone saved?
  • On what basis can you have assurance of salvation?
  • When you have had times of doubt, why did it happen and how did it change?
  • If one of your friends or family members doubted their salvation, what would you say to them?
  • How should knowing you have “eternal life” have impact on your life today?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
