SERIES TITLE: Deeper

SESSION TWO: Deep Clean

TEXT: 1John 1:5-2:2

INTRODUCTION.

The series’ theme comes from 1 John 2:24, “If what you heard from the beginning lives deeply in you, you will live deeply in both Son and Father.” [The Message] We all want to be deep. We want something lasting, substantive, and profound. This study of 1 John calls us to deeply root ourselves in Jesus, in order to thrive in a fallen world.

DISCUSSION.

Describe a time you admitted to someone that you were wrong. How did it feel?

EXAMINATION.

1:5-6    What does it tell us about God to say that he is light?

What does it mean to “walk in darkness” and how is that a lie?

1:7       What are the results of walking in the light according this verse?

1:8       How is this lie different than the one in v.6?

Is this sinlessness possible? Why or why not?

1:9-10 What does it mean to confess?

What is the promise when we do confess?

2:1-2    How does this fit into the theme of the previous verses?

What does John mean when he says Jesus is the atoning sacrifice for the “sins of the whole world”?

Does this mean everyone is automatically saved? Why not?

APPLICATION.

  • Consider this statement and share how your experience relates to it: “Release from the penalty of sin comes at salvation; Relief from the sins I still commit comes when I confess, every single time.

  • In dealing with your sin, you must avoid the extremes of helplessness and hopelessness. Helplessness says “Sin has overpowered me. I can’t have victory.” Hopelessness says “My sins are too great to be forgiven.” How does this passage help combat this?

  • How might your life be different if you increased your level of confession?

  • How is confession beneficial to us?

  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?

  • React: What did you feel?

  • Act: What are you going to do?
