SESSION FOUR: Scanning for Anger

TEXT: Ephesians 4:26-27

INTRODUCTION.

This four-part series focuses on new life in Christ. How does faith in Jesus change us? How should our attitudes, emotions, and actions be different from anyone else?

DISCUSSION.

Which of these is most often the cause of your anger, and why: (a) People you know? (b) People you don’t know? (c) Bad stuff that happens to you? (d) Bad stuff that is happening in the world? (e) Things you did? (f) Things you didn’t do?

EXAMINATION.

  • V.26 says it is possible to be angry without sinning, so when is anger sinful?
  • How is it possible to obey the instruction of not letting the sun set on your anger?
  • In what way does anger “give the devil a foothold”?
  • Read Genesis 4:3-8. How does this illustrate the truth of our passage?
  • V.31 lists several expressions of anger. According to v.32, what is key to dealing with that anger?

APPLICATION.

  • The passage has three “do not”s connected to anger. Which do you find the most challenging and why?
  • Anger is expressed sinfully by “blowing up” or “bottling up”. Is one of these a more acceptable expression in our culture than the other? Explain.
  • Which of these two expressions of anger is more problematic in your life?
  • The process of getting rid of anger can involve three parts:

1) Identify who you’re angry with and what they owe you.

2) Bring it to the Cross and confess.

3) Cancel the debt.

  • What is the most difficult part of this process and why?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?

Start evaluating life by what was done for you on the cross, instead of what was done to you by others.
