SERIES TITLE: Living in God's Story

SESSION TEN: Will You Still Worship?

TEXT: Genesis 47-28-48:22

INTRODUCTION.

This series focuses on the life of Joseph and his brothers. It includes incidents of failure and success, jealousy and integrity, sin and righteousness. Through it all, God’s plan prevails. These stories should increase our confidence in God, and our willingness to follow him in all situations.

DISCUSSION.

Name some of the reasons you became distracted in a worship service. How often were the distractions that happened during the worship time, or the frame of mind or feeling you had before you got there?

EXAMINATION.

47:28-31 Jacob (Israel) lived as long in Egypt (17 years) as Joseph had lived at home before his brothers sold him into slavery.

Do you think that has any significance? Why or why not?

Why do you think it is so important to Jacob that he not be buried in Egypt?

Why is the detail of Jacob worshiping mentioned in the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11, when there are so many other things that happened in his life?

48:1-4  What is significant about Jacob referring back to the appearance and message of God Almighty?

48:5-11 Jacob effectively adopts his grandsons as his own sons. Why is this remarkable?

Jacob seems to reminisce about losing Rachel. What does this indicate to you?

Since Joseph does not have a tribe named after him, but both his sons do, how are there only 12 tribes of Israel? Note which tribe is not counted and why in Numbers 1.

48:12-22 Can you think of any reason why Jacob insists on blessing the younger over the firstborn?

Note all the ways that Jacob refers to God’s presence in his life in chapter 48. Compare that to all the ways you can remember in which he experienced disappointment, grief, deprivation, and loss.

APPLICATION.

  • How have the negative experiences of your life shaped your response or attitude toward God?
  • What types of experiences, concerns, or attitudes keep us from blessing others?
  • What can you do to instill in your family, children, friends a sense of how God has been at work in your life?
  • How can you better worship God (with gratitude and awe) in spite of what has or hasn’t happened in your life?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
