INTRODUCTION.

While American culture is obsessed with winning and personal success, Scripture calls us to a different way of life. In this passage, the Apostle Paul describes his approach to life that is centered on the good news of Jesus. This could radically alter your attitude and behavior.

DISCUSSION.

Can you think of a time when you gave up your rights, privileges, safety in order to help someone else? If so, describe that experience.

EXAMINATION.

  • V.19 What does Paul mean that he is “free from all” and in what way could he make himself a “servant to all”?
  • V.20 Paul is Jewish, so what does he mean that he became as a Jew to the Jews?
  • V.21 Which law is he talking about and who are those that outside the law?
  • V.22 Who are the weak and in what way would Paul become weak?
  • V.23 What is a win for Paul?

APPLICATION.

  • Paul set aside his rights, privileges, preferences to reach others. That is what Jesus did in coming to earth. What are some things you have done or could do to reach others?
  • There can be a fine line between identifying with others and compromising the message. How do you guard against extreme separatism and extreme compromise?
  • Which approach have you personally used the most or seen others use in trying to share the gospel: Messenger or Relationship? Which have you found to be most effective and why?
  • How is it possible to enter someone else’s world, and identify with them without judging or sinning? How did Jesus do that?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
