Sermons

Introduction.

Acts is the story of the spread of the gospel – the good news of salvation through Jesus. Acts 1:8 is key where, right before His ascension to heaven, Jesus commissions the believers; naming four areas the gospel will spread to. In the rest of Acts, Luke recounts in specifics how the gospel spread to those areas. The narrative begins with waiting, then the coming of the Holy Spirit with ensuing miraculous events, Peter’s first sermon, and then the salvation of many. Acts 2:42-47 gives a summary statement of the practices and dynamics of the early church (a good litmus test for the present day church). Then in chapters 3 and 4, he recounts the story of Peter, John, a lame man, and the opponents as seen here in the Sadducees and Sanhedrin. In any book or story, we can read/observe the actions of others or we can insert ourselves into the story. If we do the latter, who are we to identify with?

DISCUSSION.

Relate the story of a time when you were part what you felt was a ministry disaster that God used in a great way.

EXAMINATION.

Summarize the story of Acts chapter 3.

Along with the healing, what other miracle happened? (4:4)

Why were the Jewish leaders upset? (Acts 4 verses 2, 7, 10-12, 13, 17)

When asked, who does Peter give the credit to? (4:8-12)

Although believers today don’t fit the criteria of being Apostles like Peter and John, what similarities from the context do we share with them?

APPLICATION.

The Sanhedrin presented a roadblock as to why Peter and John should not share their faith. What roadblocks do you have in sharing your faith?

As you look at your own life, what are you currently experiencing?

KNOW --- PLANNING --- DOING --- SEEING

  • I don’t really see evangelism applying to me.
  • I KNOW that God wants me to reach others for Christ.
  • I am PLANNING how I reach others for Christ.
  • I am DOING things to reach others for Christ.
  • I am SEEING people come to Christ.

Name 1-3 people you are burdened to reach for Christ.

Share with the group one step you’d like to take to increase you impact with them.
