SERIES TITLE: In the Image of God

TEXT: Job 31:13-15

INTRODUCTION.

We join with many churches on this third Sunday in January to focus on the sanctity of human life.

DISCUSSION.

Do you think abortion is mentioned in church: too often; not often enough; about the right amount? Why?

EXAMINATION.

  • Chapter 31 is Job’s final appeal. Think about Job’s entire story, and discuss why he is defending himself. What is he trying to prove or disprove?
  • Scan the 40 verses of chapter 31. What areas of life does Job list that illustrate his righteousness?
  • Vv.13-15 How does Job’s attitude toward servants reflect godliness?
  • In what way does Job’s argument speak to the value of all life?
  • Consider Psalm 139, particularly v.16 and share how that speaks to the value of life in God’s eyes.

APPLICATION.

  • Taking Job’s example into account, why is it important that Christians do not become “one issue people”? That is, caring about abortion above all other issues related to human life?
  • Theologically, the value of human life is because it is made in the image of God. If human value is based upon capacity or development instead, why is that dangerous?
  • How should the truth that we are made in God’s image impact our stance in other social issues?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
