Introduction.

Genesis follows the work of God, moving from creation, to the entrance of sin, to judgment, to the selection of a family through which the nations will be blessed. The promises of God to Abraham were passed to Isaac, and now to his son Jacob. Jacob and his twin brother Esau are very different people. Both are flawed. Yet God’s promise flows through Jacob not Esau. Why?

SESSION TWO: Missing Grace

TEXT: Genesis 36

INTRODUCTION.

Genesis follows the work of God, moving from creation, to the entrance of sin, to judgment, to the selection of a family through which the nations will be blessed. The promises of God to Abraham were passed to Isaac, and now to his son Jacob. Jacob and his twin brother Esau are very different people. Both are flawed. Yet God’s promise flows through Jacob not Esau. Why?

DISCUSSION.

Can you relate an example of twins or siblings close in age who became polar opposites? (e.g. criminal vs. law enforcement; Christian vs. atheist)

EXAMINATION.

36:1 Where does the name Edom come from and how is it significant in Israel’s future?

36:2-5 What previous evidence do we have in Genesis that Canaanite wives were not a good idea?

36:6-8 What reasons are given for Esau to leave the land?

How do you reconcile the dual prosperity and fertility of Jacob and Esau with God’s statement “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated”? (Malachi 1:2-3; Romans 9:13)

36:9-43 What are some possible reasons for this detailed listing of all Esau’s descendants?

APPLICATION.

  • Read Hebrews 12:15-17 and discuss how and why Esau is given as a negative example.
  • How does the fact that Jacob is so flawed, encourage or discourage you?
  • In what way does making your satisfaction and success the highest priority create a spiritual problem?
  • What does it look like to interpret life through the grid of God’s promises rather than your own desires?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
