Introduction.

Advent is about waiting and expectant preparation. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant truths about preparing the way for the coming of the Lord.

SERIES TITLE: Prepare the Way

SESSION Three: Resist

TEXT: Luke 4:1-13

INTRODUCTION.

Advent is about waiting and expectant preparation. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant truths about preparing the way for the coming of the Lord.

DISCUSSION.

How would you describe the difference between a temptation and a test?

EXAMINATION.

  • Vv.1-2 Why do you think Luke emphasizes the involvement of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ experience in the desert?
  • For what reason(s) would Jesus have to face temptation?
  • How do we know temptation is not from God? (See James 1:13-14)
  • Vv.3-4 How would you describe this first temptation and Jesus’ response?
  • Vv.5-8 What is the point of the second temptation?
  • Vv.9-12 How is the third temptation different, and what does Jesus mean about putting God to the test?
  • V.13 Does this surprise, discourage, or encourage you and why?

APPLICATION.

  • Consider the first temptation. How we are constantly tempted to meet legitimate needs in illegitimate ways?
  • In light of the second temptation, how are we constantly tempted to trade the ultimate for the immediate?
  • Regarding the last temptation, how are we constantly tempted to manipulate God?
  • How can you tell the difference between a test from God or a temptation to sin?
  • Consider Hebrews 12:4. What one action will you take this week to resist temptation? How can you “up your game” in your personal struggle against sin?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?

“The Christian who is not conscious of being opposed had better watch himself for he is in danger.”

J. I. Packer

“The only way to overcome a passion for sin is with a life-dominating conviction that all God has for me through obedience is far better than anything Satan can offer.”

David Hegg
