Introduction.

Advent is about waiting and expectant preparation. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant truths about preparing the way for the coming of the Lord.

SERIES TITLE: Prepare the Way

SESSION Two: Change

TEXT: Luke 3:7-14

INTRODUCTION.

Advent is about waiting and expectant preparation. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant truths about preparing the way for the coming of the Lord.

DISCUSSION.

Describe a big change that occurred in your life and how it affected you.

EXAMINATION.

  • Vv.7-9 Why would John call these people a “brood of vipers” when they are responding to his call for repentance?

  • What benefit would the crowd claim for having Abraham as their father?
  • Why is the warning John gives so dire?
  • Vv.10-14 Why do you think John’s answers all have to do with money and possessions?

APPLICATION.

  • Discuss these signs of false repentance:
    • You don’t admit your true condition. (“brood of vipers”)
    • Your behavior doesn’t change. (“produce fruit in keeping with repentance”)
    • You see yourself as the exception. (“we have Abraham as our father”)
  • Which of these do you find the most challenging and why?
  • Discuss these signs of true repentance:
    • You will be kind. (v.10-11)
    • You will be honest. (v.12-13)
    • You will be content. (v.14)
  • Do you think any of these are common characteristics of Christians today? Why or why not?
  • If you asked John, “What should we do?” how would he answer you?
  • What one action will you take this week to produce fruit in keeping with repentance?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
