SERIES TITLE: Prepare the Way

SESSION One: Repent

TEXT: Luke 3:1-6

INTRODUCTION.

Advent is about waiting and expectant preparation. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant truths about preparing the way for the coming of the Lord.

DISCUSSION.

If you have ever made a big “turn-around” in your life, share what that was like.

EXAMINATION.

  • V.1-2 Why do you think Luke included the names and titles of these historical figures?
  • Can you think of any reasons why Luke doesn’t describe John’s clothes and diet like Matthew 3:4 and Mark 1:6 do?
  • Baptism was something done by Gentiles who wanted to become Jews. Since John calls Jews to be baptized, what is he saying about them?
  • Vv.3-6 are a quote from Isaiah. How is John’s ministry fulfilling this prophecy?
  • This exact word for “salvation” in v.6 is used by Luke only here and in Luke 2:30 and Acts 28:28. How far does salvation extend according to those passages?
  • What does it mean to repent?
  • Who needs to repent?

APPLICATION.

  • Why do those who trust Christ still need to live in repentance? (discuss these 3 reasons)
    • Because your life requires daily straightening for Christ.
    • Because it clears the way for others to come to Christ.
    • Because it increases your pleasure in Christ.
  • What keeps you from being repentant?
  • How does an unwillingness to repent impact your life?
  • How could your willingness to repent prepare the way for the Lord?
  • What do you need to repent of right now?
