SERIES TITLE: Living By Faith

SESSION TWO: Through Testing
TEXT: Genesis 22

INTRODUCTION.

The life of the great patriarch Abraham compromises a large portion of Genesis. As we continue studying through the entire book, we learn from Abraham what it means to live by faith.

DISCUSSION.

What purpose do tests serve? (school exams, random drug tests, etc.)

EXAMINATION.

  • 22:1-5 Abraham is well over 100 years old, and has been through decades of trusting God to keep his promises. Why does God test him now?

  • 22:6-10 There are a lot of specific details included here. Which ones stand out to you and why?

  • 22:11-14 Why does it say “Now I know that you fear God,” didn’t God already know? What does this mean?

  • 22:15-19 If these promises were already given to Abraham unconditionally, why does God repeat them?

APPLICATION.

  • Chapter 22 is often applied like this: We have to be willing to obey God with irrational, blind faith. What clues in this story show that not to be the main point?

  • What would you say to someone who was convinced that God told them to kill their child? What biblical evidence is there to show that Abraham’s experience was unique and outside the realm of imitation?

  • What does this account suggest about how, when, and where God provides?

  • Can you share a specific situation in which God provided for you?

  • Has God’s work in providing for you in the past had any impact on how you view your present circumstances? Why or why not?

  • In what ways can we compare Isaac and Jesus? Does this incident give you any additional insights or appreciation for Christ’s sacrifice on the cross?

  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?

  • React: What did you feel?

  • Act: What are you going to do?
