SERIES TITLE: Obstacles to God's Promises
SESSION FIVE: Culture
TEXT: Genesis 19
INTRODUCTION.

As we continue studying through Genesis, we follow the life of Abraham, the great Patriarch. After receiving astounding promises from God, Abraham is faced with one obstacle after another. There is much we can learn from the man, because all of us deal with similar obstacles in our own lives.

DISCUSSION.

When you hear the word “culture” do you have a positive, negative, or neutral reaction? Why?

EXAMINATION.

  • 19:1-3 What similarities/differences do you notice between Lot’s hospitality and Abraham’s (18:1-8)?
  • 19:4-11 What demonstrates the extent of wickedness in Sodom?
  • 19:12-22 What do you learn about Lot here?
  • 19:23-29 What part did Abraham play in Lot’s deliverance?
  • 19:30-38 What is there for us to learn from this bizarre incestuous encounter?

APPLICATION.

  • How can we influence our culture without being corrupted by it?
  • How can we live out Jesus’ words that his followers not be “of the world” even though they are “in the world”? [John 17]
  • Read 2 Peter 2:6-10 and discuss how Lot could be called righteous and what that means for us.
  • How should the assurance that God knows how to rescue the righteous and judge the unrighteous shape our lives?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
