SERIES TITLE: Obstacles to God's Promises
SESSION FOUR: Puny Prayers
TEXT: Genesis 18:16-33
INTRODUCTION.

As we continue studying through Genesis, we follow the life of Abraham, the great Patriarch. After receiving astounding promises from God, Abraham is faced with one obstacle after another. There is much we can learn from the man, because all of us deal with similar obstacles in our own lives.

DISCUSSION.

The majority of Americans say they pray every day. Do you think most of these prayers are: religious duty, situationally desperate, or relationally intimate? Why?

EXAMINATION.

  • 18:16-21 What do these verses reveal about the Lord?
  • 18:22-26 What impresses you about how Abraham approaches the Lord?
  • Do you find it unusual that Abraham would ask for the whole city to be spared? Why or why not?
  • 18:27-33 Do you find Abraham’s persistence annoying, inspiring, or tedious? Why?
  • Why do you think Abraham stopped with 10?

APPLICATION.

  • In what ways have you experienced God invitation to pray?\
  • Are there times you have ignored that invitation? How did you realize that?
  • How do you guard against prayers that are selfish and greedy?
  • If there is a “Sodom” you are more anxious to see destroyed than spared, how does Abraham’s prayer challenge your perspective?
  • Jesus encourages persistence in prayer (Luke 18:1-8), why should you pray tenaciously and how do you know when to stop?
  • Why does God invite us to pray? If He is sovereign and working out his plan, what is the point?
  • How can you pray in a way that reflects “you are dust and God is just”
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
