Introduction

Jonah is a small book that tackles some big questions like, “How does God view the nations?” “What does God expect of His people?” “What can prevent God’s people from fulfilling their mission?”  Jonah encounters many surprises. God’s surprises are opportunities for growth and impact.  We should welcome them into our lives, especially as it relates to the bigger picture of reaching the world with the gospel.

INTRODUCTION.

DISCUSSION.

What surprises have you encountered on your life journey, whether positive or negative?

EXAMINATION.

Jonah 1:1-4 Do you think God’s call was surprising to Jonah?  Why did God tell him to go to Nineveh? Why did Jonah not want to go?

Jonah didn’t stay home.  He headed “overseas” but went in the opposite direction of where God had called him.  Might this suggest anything about his view of God?

1:4-17 Describe the reactions of the sailors as the storm raged, and when it subsided. What spiritual dynamics might have been at play?  What is the contrast with Jonah?

3:5-7 Jonah changed his mind and went to Nineveh.  How did the Ninevites react to Jonah’s message?  Does this surprise you?

4:6-7 What three things did God provide for Jonah as he waited for the city to be destroyed?  Discuss Jonah’s reaction.  What lessons did he still need to learn?

APPLICATION.

What security threats or enemies do we face today?  How do we feel about loving these people and sharing the gospel with them?

Jonah did not volunteer for the job.  Should God’s mission today rely on volunteers?

What does it mean to receive a “call?”  Do you have one?

What is your impression of the spiritual “harvest” – are your neighbors and the unreached around the world responsive or unresponsive?  What did Jesus say about this? (John 4:35-36)

    • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
    • React: What did you feel?
    • Act: What are you going to do?
