SESSION TWO: Differences
TEXT: Genesis 10
INTRODUCTION.

As we continue studying through Genesis, we come to the aftermath of the Great Flood. God judged a world filled with violence and evil, saving only Noah and his family. It immediately becomes clear that sin was not destroyed by the flood.

DISCUSSION

Do you have family or friends you have lost touch with because they moved away? How and why did distance change the relationship?

EXAMINATION

  • This genealogy is not an ethnographical myth, but historical record of the spread of the human family; a panoramic view of all known human cultures. But why is it selective rather than comprehensive in what it records?
  • What is the relationship between the information in chapter 10 and the account of the Tower of Babel in chapter 11?
  • Note the differences that are detailed in the chapter:
  1. Names and Nations, vv.2-7
  2. Skills and Systems, vv.8-14
  3. Locations and Languages, v. 5 & 25
  4. Destinies, vv.15-31
  • Why are the descendants of Noah’s oldest son listed last?
  • Which of these differences do you see as the most divisive or problematic?

APPLICATION.

Consider this statement: Despite our differences, one God made us all.

  • How should that influence our view of people?

  • How does this hold true for those who do not even believe in the God of the Bible?
  • In what way does the gospel of Christ challenge racism in any form?
  • How should this moderate our expressions of patriotism?
  • How does this inform our efforts in global missions?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
