TEXT: Genesis 9:18-29
INTRODUCTION.

As we continue studying through Genesis, we come to the aftermath of the Great Flood. God judged a world filled with violence and evil, saving only Noah and his family. It immediately becomes clear that sin was not destroyed by the flood.

DISCUSSION

Describe any experience you have had with growing fruit trees or vines. How long did it take until something good was produced?

EXAMINATION
  • From this story only, what is your impression of Noah?
  • How does this compare with the image of Noah given in 6:8-10?
  • What does this imply about children respecting parents?
  • Why or why not does righteousness mean sinlessness?
  • What clues do you see that help identify who did wrong and what they did wrong?
  • Other passages to consider: Leviticus 18:6-23; 20:11, 17 (especially in the King James, Revised Standard, or New American Standard versions); Genesis 19:30-38.
  • Why do you think Noah’s drunkenness isn’t condemned in this text?
  • Other than the reason given in the sermon, why would Noah curse Canaan not Ham?

APPLICATION.

  • Why is mocking your father so serious, even today? (Eph. 6:1-3)
  • When and why is it appropriate to let love cover over a multitude of sins? (1 Pet. 4:8)
  • Can you give an example of letting love cover over sin?
  • What is the difference between covering over and ignoring sin, letting it go unchecked?
  • Have you ever caught yourself delighting in the failure of someone else? Why is that wrong?
  • What does the connection between Noah’s sin and the Fall tell us? (see chart below)

Chart

  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
