SESSION THREE: Jesus Came to Testify
TEXT: John 18:37
INTRODUCTION.

Advent is about waiting and expectancy. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant reasons why the Eternal Son of God became flesh.

DISCUSSION.

If you have ever had to testify in a trial, what was that like?

What is eyewitness testimony, and how is it different from hearsay?

EXAMINATION

v.37 From what Jesus says to Pilate, consider these four observations about truth.

1. Truth is singular. Why is it significant that Jesus didn’t testify to “a truth,” or “part of the truth”? What is absolute truth?

2. Truth is other-worldly. How does Jesus refer to his pre-existence? What other Scriptures talk about it? Why is it important that Jesus existed before Bethlehem?

3. Truth is confirmable. What does it mean that “everyone on the side of truth listens to me”? (‘listens to me’ is the same phrase used in John 10:3) How does our obedience confirm the truth? (consider John 5:24 and 14:23)

4. Truth is a person. How does Jesus embody the truth? In what way did he “testify” to the truth?

APPLICATION.
  • People want truth. So why is it often so difficult for people to accept Jesus claim to be the Truth? What kept you or is keeping you from believing Jesus is the Truth?
  • How does this quote fit into what Jesus says? “Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that unless we love the truth we cannot know it.” [Blaise Pascal]
  • How can you guard against truth becoming “relative” in your own life? In other words, how can you keep truth from becoming just a matter of opinion?
  • If Jesus is the Truth, how should following him change your life?
  • Can you give any personal examples of how truth from or about Jesus has changed your life?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
