SESSION TWO: Jesus Came to Destroy

TEXT: 1John 3:8-10
INTRODUCTION.

Advent is about waiting and expectancy. As God’s people awaited the first Advent, the incarnation of Jesus, so now we await the second Advent, the return of Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will study some significant reasons why the Eternal Son of God became flesh.

DISCUSSION.
What “destructive” things would you be willing to do in order to protect a loved one from harm or rescue them from a dangerous situation?

EXAMINATION
v.8           What is the devil’s work?
What has the Son of God done to destroy it?
According to v.4, what is sin?
v.9-10     How does John say believers experience the destroying of the devil’s works?
How do we know John doesn’t mean Christians can live in sinless perfection? (see 1:8-10)
According to John, how many different classes of people are in the world and who are they?

APPLICATION.
  • What, if anything, makes it hard to believe that Jesus came to destroy the devil’s works?
  • How does v.8 change your perspective about your temptations and failures?
  • What would you tell someone who lived in obvious and unrepentant sin while claiming to belong to Christ?
  • Discuss these 5 Signs Jesus Has Destroyed the Devil’s Work in Your Life:
    1. You are not content to live like Hell.
    2. You know the Cross is the only cure for your moral sickness.
    3. You no longer hate God, but love him and want to be like him.
    4. You refuse to boast of your self-righteousness.
    5. You can refute the accusations of the enemy.
