Introduction

Genesis 1-4 tells of Creation, Fall, and the dreadful consequences of sin in the human family. Genesis 12-50 give the account of God’s chosen family. Chapters 5-11 connect those two themes. This section is framed by two genealogies of 10 generations each: Adam to Noah (5:1-32); Noah to Terah (11:10-26). The first genealogy and the subsequent account of Noah are the focus of this series.

SERIES TITLE: LEAVE A LEGACY
SESSION THREE:Different
TEXT: Genesis 6:9-7:5
INTRODUCTION.

DISCUSSION.
When someone is referred to as “different” is that usually a negative or a positive in your experience? Explain.

EXAMINATION.
Vv.8-10 Noah received grace and that made him different. What is significant about the biblical pattern of grace before obedience?
V.11-13 Does God’s reaction to the violence of humanity bother you? Why or why not?
Vv.14-22 What significance is there that the Hebrew word for “pitch” comes from the Hebrew word for “atonement”?
How do the specifications of the ark help or hinder your appreciation for what Noah accomplished?
7:1-5 Notice the repeated phrase that Noah “did all that the Lord commanded him.” List all the factors you can think of that made his obedience so difficult.
Consider these New Testament references to Noah and what they contribute to our understanding of the story:
Hebrews 11:7; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5.

APPLICATION.
“Listen to God and do whatever he says.”
  • Can you think of any specific ways to apply that principle in your own life?
  • How can you test if what you are hearing is from God or not?
  • Can you name some ways Christians “stand out from the herd” that are not biblical or not helpful in accomplishing what God wants most?
  • Do you think the church in American tends more toward fitting in with the world or being different?
  • What are some examples of how you could do a better job of being “in the world” but not “of it”?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What one thing could you do to apply this Scripture?
