INTRODUCTION.

In this series, we will explore the opening chapters of Genesis. The end result must be a growing appreciation for the majesty of God, or we have missed the point. This glorious passage forms a hymn of honor to the Creator.

EXAMINATION.

3:1-6 Discuss how God’s word was doubted, distorted, and then disregarded.
3:7 How did sin ruin innocence?
3:8-11 How did sin ruin intimacy with God?
3:12-16 In what way did sin ruin relationships? (key is the last sentence of v.16)
3:17-24 In what way did sin ruin the enjoyment of all God’s gifts?
4:1-5 What was the difference between the two offerings?
         How did Cain’s true heart show itself?
4:6-7 What is God inviting Cain to do or not do?

4:8-16 How does God show mercy to Cain?

 
APPLICATION.
  • Can you share any examples of situations when you have doubted, distorted, or disregarded God’s word?
    • What damage was done?
    • How was it corrected?
  • Can you relate any experiences of how sin ruined your innocence, intimacy with God, relationships, or enjoyment of God’s gifts?
  • Was there a time when you became convicted that what you were offering to God was half-hearted or wrongly motivated?
    • How quickly were you convicted?
    • Did you respond?
  • If unconfessed deliberate sin leads to greater sin, how do we guard against it?
  • How do we live out the truth of Romans 6:14 and master sin? (as Cain failed to do)
  • What is a healthy way to appreciate the costliness of sin and yet appropriately celebrate that Jesus paid it all?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What one thing could you do to apply this Scripture?
