SERIES TITLE:MAJESTY
SESSION TWO:The God Who Rests
TEXT: Genesis 2:1-3
INTRODUCTION.

In this series, we will explore the opening chapters of Genesis. The end result must be a growing appreciation for the majesty of God, or we have missed the point. This glorious passage forms a hymn of honor to the Creator.

DISCUSSION. How would you compare the pace of life today with the pace of life for your parents?

EXAMINATION.

Vv.1-3 Compare this description of day seven with the previous six. What is different?

  • Why did God rest, according to this text?
  • The word “finished” (kaw-law) is also used in Genesis 24:22. How does that inform our understanding of this text?
  • What does it mean that God blessed the seventh day and made it holy?
  • What did that look like for ancient Israel? (Exodus 20:8-11, 31:14-18)
  • How does that translate to the New Testament Church? (Consider Colossians 2:13-17, Romans 14:5-6 in your conclusions)

APPLICATION.

  • If God made life to be a pattern of work and rest, how do we apply that without becoming legalistic?
  • Is applying a Sabbath principle more important or equally important for a Christian as it is for anyone else? Why?
  • What are some practical ways you are able to worship through your work?
  • How do you avoid worshiping your work?
  • When it comes to worshiping through rest, consider these 7 suggestions and discuss what that might look like: 1) Come to a full stop; 2) Rejoice in what was accomplished; 3) Connect with the Creator; 4) Stir your soul; 5) Declare your dependence; 5) Serve one another; 7) Restore the rhythm.
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What one thing could you do to apply this Scripture?
