Introduction

Stories are great ways to tell following generations of how God has worked in our own lives and in the lives of those who’ve gone before us. Baptism is just one way we can tell a story, visually and verbally, of God’s redemptive work. This past Sunday, we told the stories of those who’ve recently come into relationship with Christ by celebrating their baptisms as a church family!

INTRODUCTION.

DISCUSSION:
This would be a great week for those in your small group to share their testimony of how they trusted Christ. This will help encourage each other in your faith and practice the art of telling stories that reflect God’s redemptive work in our lives. A testimony has three essential elements:
  1. What was your life like before you trusted Jesus?
  2. How did you come to trust Jesus?
  3. What has your life been like since you have trusted Jesus?
(You should be able to frame your testimony in 3 minutes or less usually…)

EXAMINATION:
Read Romans 6:3-11. How many times do these verses reference “death”? Whose death? How is dying symbolic of our trusting Christ? What dies when we are saved? What do you do when someone dies? What does Christ’s death and resurrection do to our sin? What actions does Paul call us to perform in verses 11-13? How does baptism picture this process?

Read Psalm 78:1-7. What is the Psalmist encouraging us to take heed and pay attention to? How can stories of God’s work in our lives encourage others? Read verses 3-4. What are the three generations mentioned in these verses? What are we to share and not hide from future generations? How does this apply to celebrating baptism together? Read verses 6-8. What are some benefits of sharing the stories of God’s work as a spiritual family?

APPLICATION:
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What are you going to do?
