SERIES TITLE:DIVERSITY
SESSION THREE:Revealing the Mystery
TEXT: Ephesians 3:6-11
INTRODUCTION.
In this series, we will confront questions such as: Does God’s plan for his church include it being multi-ethnic? Is true cultural and ethnic diversity even possible for a local church? Is such diversity more trouble than it’s worth? Why should we care?

DISCUSSION. What is the difference between a mystery and a secret?

EXAMINATION.

  • Vv.4-6 What makes this a mystery?
  • Why would it only be revealed at this point in history?
  • Vv.7-9 Why would Paul consider himself “the very least of all the saints”?
  • Vv.10-11 What important mission does the church have in God’s plan?
  •  “Manifold” means very varied. In Greek literature it was used to describe multicolored cloth or a bouquet of flowers. How does that impact your understanding of this verse?
  • Consider other places in Ephesians that use these same phrases: (rulers and authorities, 6:12); (heavenly places, 1:3 & 20). How does this help clarify who is included in the “rulers and authorities” Paul refers to?

APPLICATION.

  • “Through a diverse church, God declares to all cosmic forces that the victory belongs to Jesus.” If this statement is true, what steps should a local church take to fulfill it?
  • How can we keep our ethnic culture from becoming a higher allegiance than Christ?
  • What do you see as the biggest obstacle in living this out, and how does the gospel address that obstacle?
  • If God intended from the beginning that his church be diverse, why does it seem so difficult to accomplish? Why hasn’t God made this easier?
  • If you have ever participated in a Christian gathering that was cross-cultural or multi-cultural, are there any spiritual benefits and blessings you experienced?
  • How could those blessings be repeated, replicated, multiplied, enhanced?
  • Fact: What is a key truth that you understood from this passage?
  • React: What did you feel?
  • Act: What one thing could you do to apply this Scripture?
