Introduction

As societal attitudes towards homosexuality change, it is important to properly understand biblical teaching on the issue. While this sermon only deals with one of the passages, it is complete enough to answer questions such as: Does the Bible really condemn homosexual behavior? Is same-sex intimacy a sin greater than others? How should the church respond?

SERMON TITLE: A BIBLICAL VIEW OF SAME SEX INTIMACY
TEXT: ROMANS 1:18-24
INTRODUCTION.

EXAMINATION.

Vv.18-25 What does it mean to “worship and serve the creature rather than the Creator”?
How is homosexuality related to that?

Vv.26-32 Three Ways Homosexual Behavior Is Characteristic of All Sin:
1. Like all sin, homosexual behavior distorts what God created as good.
-What are some examples of sin misusing or distorting God’s original design or purpose? -Where in this passage does it emphasize homosexual behavior as the sin, rather than simply a temptation or orientation?
2. Like all sin, homosexual behavior carries consequences.
-How does one “receive in themselves” the penalty for their error? In other words, what kind of penalties do we experience in this life when we give ourselves over to any sin?
3. Like all sin, homosexual behavior needs God’s forgiveness.
-According to Rom. 2:1-4, how does God encourage us to repent?
-If repentance is “a change of mind that results in a change of life” what does that look like?

APPLICATION.

• How does this passage challenge you to view your own sin?

• Why and how should you begin to genuinely care about a homosexual who is your “neighbor”?

• Despite whatever temptations, weaknesses, failures we have, what kind of transformation can Christ bring? (e.g. Rom. 6:12-14)

• How do we walk the line between not celebrating homosexual behavior because it is sin, and yet loving those who engage in it?
