SERMON:WHAT DO THESE STONES MEAN?

TEXT: JOSHUA 4

SPEAKER: MIKE MCGINTY

INTRODUCTION. This message takes a look at an important historical event in the formation of God’s people and the nation of Israel. The significance of this is then applied to Cypress Bible Church’s history and its relevance to our future as we engage in God’s program for the peoples of the world.

DISCUSSION. What famous memorials have you visited (or would like to visit) and how did they speak to you? What significance should we place on past events and how are they relevant to God’s future purposes for our lives?

EXAMINATION.

• Many amazing events were part of the history of Israel’s initial nationhood. Why do you think God instructed them to memorialize this particular event where they crossed the Jordan River? How was it similar or dissimilar to crossing the Red Sea 40 years earlier?

• What challenges do you think they faced in transitioning from Moses to Joshua’s leadership? How did God prepare them for this?

• Why do you think the phrase “be strong and courageous” is repeated four times in chapter one? vv. 6, 7, 9, 18

• In reviewing events from Joshua chapters 1-4, how was God working on the other side of the river to achieve His purposes?

• This memorial was erected both for future generations and for people everywhere (v. 24). What does that mean and why is this so important?

APPLICATION.

• What faith lessons do we need to learn from the past and apply to the future? Recall and reflect on your own faith stories or those of Cypress Bible Church. How is God leading you or the church to exercise faith now?

• How do we pass on our heritage of faith to the next generation? What should your level of involvement look like in this important process?

• What are the obstacles that may hold us back in following other’s example of faith? How do we overcome them?

• Fact: God is preparing us and orchestrating connected circumstances to accomplish His purposes for us and the peoples of the world. • React: What ‘rivers’ do you think God is challenging you or CBC to cross in faith?

• Act: In light of the faith of others of those who have preceded us, how will you run your race in the days ahead? (Hebrews 12:1-2)
